An autobiographical blurb about Dr. Smith:
I began teaching with Memphis City Schools in the fall of 2000 as a fifth-grade Math and Reading teacher. I obtained my School Counseling License in 2002 and worked at Treadwell Middle/High School and American Way Middle School as a School Counselor. I relocated to Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas in 2008 to work as a Counselor in the Mansfield Independent School District.
One year ago, I returned home to Memphis and am so excited to serve the fantastic students and families of Grahamwood with the stellar faculty and staff. I am a graduate of Vanderbilt, The University of Memphis and Union University.
I have a teenage son, Timothy Paul.
Welcome back to school! Grahamwood Elementary School
We're running full-steam ahead for the 2013-2014 school year!
August 2013
Dear Parents and Guardians of Grahamwood Students:
Greetings, and I welcome you to the 2013-2014 school year! I am delighted and honored to serve as School Counselor for Grahamwood's outstanding students and fabulous families. I will ensure that your children receive the assistance and support to experience high academic achievement, positive social interactions and exposure to various career options.
I use reading, writing, mathematical and technological skills in all my classroom guidance activities to facilitate academic success. Additionally, I cooperate with the administration and the classroom teachers as part of a Student Support Team on an as-needed basis. To reinforce and promote positive character development, the character education program highlights a monthly trait and includes incentives, rewards and program assemblies. Per parental permission, I can counsel with students individually or in small groups for various reasons, such as study skills, grief/bereavement, anger management or self-esteem. I am always available for crisis situations that may arise unexpectedly. I coordinate Red Ribbon Week in October with a series of events and activities promoting a drug-free lifestyle. Career discussions, games and activities will be incorporated throughout the school year, however the annual “Cheers for Careers” Fair in the spring involves speakers, assemblies and a special dress-up day. I am also the Student Council Sponsor and a Co-Sponsor for our newly chartered National Jr. Beta Club (yay, Ms. Neal!).
For your convenience, I will regularly update the Counselor NETwork page through our school web site—here you will find monthly motivational messages, details on the Character Education Program and special events such as the No-Bully Campaign, Red Ribbon Week and Career Week, and general tips and advice on school-related matters, including the Counselor Connection Blog for students. Occasionally, notices may be sent home. I have an open-door policy to address any questions or concerns your might have, so please do not hesitate to contact me at the school (901-416-5952; 901-416-5992-direct) or email me through the school web site at [email protected]. I anticipate an exciting, enriching school year for the benefit of all Grahamwood students and their families.
Sincerely,
Dayciaa C. Smith, Ed.D., NCC- Professional School Counselor
