Grahamwood Family:
Our Character Theme for the 2013-2014 school year is that "Grahamwood Dragons are "H.E.R.O.I.C.K.I.D.S." Each letter of the word represents a monthly character trait that we will highlight and promote at the school. At the end of each month, a student who has best exhibited that trait for the month will be chosen from each class and receive the "Heroic Star" award for that month. The honoree will get to eat on stage during the lunch period ("Heroic Cafe'") with other awardees and myself.

PEACE WEEK 2014
January 13-17, 2014
For Peace Week 2014, there will be a Super Sock Drive sponsored by the Kindergarten Team to donate men's socks to the Memphis Union Mission. Also, Ms. Gunn, ELL Teacher, is creating a film integrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech with Grahamwood students reciting certain portions of the famous discourse. Powerful and profound!
There is also a Powerpoint slideshow composed by Dr. Smith, Counselor, recognizing peaceful movements and honoring peaceful leaders in our society.
In addition, there will be a "Peace Out n Your Pajamas" day suggested by Grahamwood Student Council to show Dragon support for keeping the peace. Hooray!!!
Healthy Choices Week 2013 @ Grahamwood Elementary
November 18-November 21, 2013
Monday, November 18– Healthy Neighborhoods/Healthy Community Day: Students in P.E. classes will rake leaves and prune crepe myrtles for campus beautification; classrooms; all Grahamwood students and teachers will be more mindful of cleaning up hallways, classrooms and cafeterias
Tuesday, November 19– Drug-Free Day Day/I Choose 2 Be Drug-Free: KK-2nd grade students will get drug-free coloring sheets; 3rd-5th grade students will do an article critique on the effects of drugs.
Wednesday, November 20-Healthy Relationships Day: Students can make posters or collages showing healthy, positive relationships: family poster, friendship poster, classroom poster, etc. Maximum poster/collage size is 18X28. Pictures can be displayed as quality work outside the classroom.
Thursday, November 21 – Healthy Habits Day: Students will be reminded about eating healthfully, drinking plenty of water, and getting the proper amount of sleep each night. Classes will do PE-suggested in-class exercises for 10-minutes of the day (information and scheduled times will be placed in teachers’ boxes). During recess or other recreational time, classes can walk out to the organic garden to see healthful foods.

Red Ribbon Week is our “Be Drug-Free/Just Say No to Drugs” Week that is celebrated at schools nationwide.
Each day of Red Ribbon Week will be a different theme:
Thursday, October 24, 2013- “We’re ReaDy to be drug-free” (students/teachers wear the color RED): Drug-Free Walk around the track—times will be given to teachers
Friday, October 25, 2013 – “Team Up Against Drugs” (students will wear favorite team sports shirts-jerseys/paraphernalia)
Monday, October 28, 2013 – “One School, One Goal: Drug-Free Grahamwood Dragons” (everybody wears a Grahamwood t-shirt or sweatshirt)
Tuesday, October 29, 2013 – “My future is bright with no drugs in sight” (students wear shades/sunglasses)
Wednesday, October 30, 2013 – “Put a cap on drugs” (Wear your favorite cap/hat)
Thursday, October 31, 2013 – “Our School Rocks Drug-Free” (students dress up as their favorite book character to celebrate reading and enjoy the SOCK HOP)
KARMA Positive Poetry and Song Program is coming to Grahamwood Elementary on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 in celebration of National Bully Prevention Month.
Each morning on the Announcements, a Character Quote and Character Reflection for the Week will be read:
Helpfulness
Week 1: Help a friend in need, and surely you have done a good deed.
Reflection 1: Think of someone you helped during the first week of school and how you helped him/her. Repeat the same thoughtful act this week.
Week 2: Be sure to always do your part and give your very best right from the start.
Reflection 2: When have you cooperated with another person or a group of people to accomplish a task or achieve a goal? Remember how great it felt to be successful.
Week 3: By observing others, we can discover ways to help each other.
Reflection 3: What was the last helpful act you saw someone do? Seek out an opportunity to make a difference for someone today.
Week 4: Helping hands give strength, confidence and hope.
Reflection 4: Recall people in your life who have lent helping hands when you really needed them. Write them a letter or make a card today, so they know how much you appreciate their assistance.
Effectiveness
Week 1: A job well done is a goal begun!
Reflection 1: When was the last good job you did, and how did you feel after finishing the job? Keep up the good work!
Week 2: Always do your best on the very first try.
Reflection 2: Think of people you know who put their very best into all that they do. Talk to them; learn from their ways.
Week 3: Listen, learn, and make a difference for yourself and others by being a great student.
Reflection 3: Who has influenced you to do well in school, and whom have you influenced?
It is great to have a role model, but also become a role model.
Quote 4: Put quality time and work into everything you produce.
Reflection 4: What have you made lately that took much time, effort and energy. What was the result? I'm sure you were pleased.
Responsibility
Week 1: Responsibility is the key to success.
Reflection 1: When was the last time you experienced success because you were responsible? Go for it again.
Week 2: Doing what matters most when it matters most--that's a great motto for responsibility.
Reflection 2: What matters most in your life, and how are you showing responsibility in that area? Keep improving.
Week 3: If we say that we care, then we must stay aware.
Reflection 3: Whether it's schoolwork, games, books, toys or pets, are you paying attention to how you need to care for your belongings? Think what it means to show concern.
Week 4: Responsibility is like a regular paycheck; you get what you give.
Reflection 4: Do you choose to be responsible? If so, get ready to reap the rewards of your wisdom because they are coming.
Organization
Week 1: Learn to organize, and earn the "personal reward" prize?
Reflection 1: How have you learned to become organized? What sort of reward have you received for this effort?
Week 2: Order is an important part of school success.
Reflection 2: In what ways do you need to be organized to succeed in school? If you have areas to improve,
make a list of those today.
Week 3: Setting a schedule keeps you on track and on time.
Reflection 3: Do you have a daily schedule you keep? If not, create one today and stick to it.
Intelligence
Week 1: Your intelligence impresses people with your very best.
Reflection 1: To whom have you shown your intelligence recently? Make a point to show a sign of intelligence today.
Week 2: A true mark of intelligence is thinking for yourself.
Reflection 2: What are things you think about that show your intelligence?
Week 3: Gaining intelligence builds up brain muscle.
Reflection 3: In what ways do you gain intelligence? Maybe it's reading, writing or drawing. Find ways to express your super intelligence today.

Week 1: Get inspired. Imagine. Dream big!
Reflection 1: What is the most exciting, creative activity you can imagine yourself doing, now and in the future. Make plans to have your dream come true.
Week 2: Inventions can start with simple ideas that become spectacular products.
Reflection 2: What is something you believe you would like to invent that can change your life for the better, or even influence the world? Talk that idea out with someone this week.
Week 3: Creativity comes in many different forms. Your individual talents make you special.
Reflection 3: In what ways are you uniquely creative? Share that skill or talent with someone this week.
Week 4: Creativity is like a car engine. It takes many different tools working together for it to operate.
Reflection 4: What toold do you use for creativity? Maybe it's books, games or visual art.
Kindness
Week 1: A kind heart does good deeds for others.
Reflection 1: What good deeds have you done for others recently? Continue those acts of kindness this week.
Week 2: Kind words keep friends to the end.
Reflection 2: What kind words have you shared with friends? Spread these kind words around to help your friendships grow.
Week 3: Find it in your heart to be forgiving.
Reflection 3: Think of someone you may need to forgive, or someone of whom you can ask forgiveness. It is a kind gesture to apologize and accept apologies when given.
Week 4: :Niceness" is a great name to earn for yourself.
Reflection 4: When people think of "niceness", do they think of you? Why or why not? Make "niceness" a new name for yourself.
